Since China entered the flood season this year, its southern part has been battered by severe floods triggered by a continuation of heavy rainstorms. The flood has inundated vast farmland, roads and villages in provinces such as Hunan, Hubei and Anhui, causing huge economic losses.
Majitang Town, located near the Zi River in Taojiang County, Hunan, is the hometown of Zhan Chitao, one of Poly’s employees. It is one of the worst-affected areas where the flood has swept away most of the houses, forcing many residents to leave their homes.
Tianfumiao Community, where Zhan’s families live, was faced with the shortage of drinking water and food. This worried every member in Poly as well as Zhan Chitao, who was carrying out after-sales service and training in Cameroon.
At this news, leaders of Poly called for donation and started collecting rice for residents right away. With concerted efforts of Poly’s labor union, Party-masses Department and our Shanghai branch, a special truck loaded with disaster-relief materials was driven into the town a thousand kilometers away in only a few days.
Regardless of their sweat and thirsty, volunteers from Poly started unloading the materials the moment they arrived at the town, with a hope that the locals could have something to eat as soon as possible.
Their arrival excited the leaders and the villagers of the town, who were surprised and touched by support from Poly, a company far away in Beijing, at the moment of disaster.
“How did you know about this place?” “Where did you come from?” “You must have tired yourself out.” “Have you eaten anything on the way here?” The kind villagers seemed to forget the trouble they were in and showed great concern for those weary volunteers. Those solicitous enquiries and expressions showed the affection between fellow countrymen.
On the morning of July 8th, Li Qing, Deputy Party Secretary of Majitang, accepted the disaster-relief materials from Poly at the donation ceremony hosted by Chen Xuejun, secretary of the Party’s Tianfumiao branch. During the ceremony, Guo Lifang, the leader of Poly’s Party-masses Department, expressed our concerns for the villagers on behalf of Poly.
Volunteers, together with the community staff, dispensed rice to the locals and encouraged them to make proper arrangements for their daily life during this period. Later, Guo Lifang visited Zhan’s families to express sympathy and solicitude for them on behalf of Poly.
Assistance from far and near will eventually help the flood-stricken areas through this difficult period. Poly, with a strong sense of social responsibility, always strives to carry out charity activities. This is not only because of our respect for life, but also the importance we place on responsibility in our development.
